Here is a fun custom set I did for a friend that styles hair. These are to hold her combs for work, which by regulation have to start out labeled clean and then labeled dirty after use. She knew she would like whatever I made so she kind of just let me do whatever I want. I am very happy with how they turned out and so is she! It was really nice to do a little embroidery project too
I’ve also been kinda giving sewing lessons. How did that happen? I’m not sure, somehow Rice Rocket talked me into it. I explained to her that I have never taught or even taken a proper sewing class, but she is still really excited about learning how I do things. So far there has only been a small incident with the ahem, rotary cutter, but other than that she has caught on really fast. No broken needles and I don’t think I’ve made her rip out any stitches. I actually hauled up my extra Singer 201 machine and cabinet so she would have a machine to practice on even while I am working. That worked really well because she was to a point where she was sewing along, but I would be there for questions and troubleshooting. It was pretty funny to hear her sew out loud. There was a lot of “ughh this stitch isn’t straight!” and “ahh I forgot to backstitch!”. I have thrown her right into how to make zipper pouches and at first she was finishing up some that I had half finished, but now she has successfully put in a zipper herself and made one ‘from scratch’!
I know a big problem with learning to sew is getting to know your machine and how to thread it correctly and have the tension set right, etc. If any of these little things are out of order it makes it impossible to have a correct stitch and you think “I’m doing this all wrong, I can’t sew, etc” when in fact it is just a minor thing. Also I think I am spreading the gospel of the Singer 201, which is an amazing machine that once you learn how to use it turns sewing into an almost intuitive motion.
